is safe to say that the Seattle Seahawks Seahawks were their own worst enemies Sunday against the Washington Redskins. The Seahawks out-snapped the Redskins by 15 plays and outgained them by nearly 200 yards. Seattle also had 16 penalties for 138 yards and is on pace for the second most penalty yards in a season.
The Cardinals started long-time backup Drew Stanton in Carson Palmer’s absence, and he looked the part for a quarter and a half against the 49ers. The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 14-3 lead and were threatening to add seven more when Stanton woefully underthrew Germaine Gresham, which led to a pick in the end zone. Overall it would be difficult to call the Cardinal’s victory dominant.
The Seahawks have the dreaded Thursday night money-maker against the Cardinals and are looking to bounce back quickly from Week 9’s loss. The Seahawks opened Sunday night as a 6.5 favorite against Arizona. That line has since moved a point to 5.5 thanks to 56 percent of the money coming in on the Cardinals side.
When the real money comes in, this one should come back to about a two-score game. What is most interesting about the opening numbers for Seattle’s Week 10 match-up was an over/under of 43 points. That line has quickly moved to 41.5 and looks to continue to move into the 30’s with 99 percent of the money on the under.
This over/under intrigues me. Thursday night games are only good for the bottom line of the NFL and that means that many not-100-percent players are out on the field each week. The Cardinals defense has been, terrible, for lack of a better word, and with a couple of suspensions potentially being handed out after a late hit on C.J Beathard, I could see the Seahawks bouncing back in a big way and posting a plus-30 spot.
Either way, Thursday Night Football games are wildly erratic in their results and typically don’t make the best games to wager.
The Seahawks face off against the Cardinals Thursday night at 5:25 p.m. PT.
The Seattle Seahawks will not bring in another kicker this week after Blair Walsh missed all three of his field goal attempts this weekend, coach Pete Carroll said on Monday.
Carroll was quick to extinguish the fire when asked on his 710 ESPN Seattle radio show if it was a possibility following the Seahawks' 17-14 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday.
No," Carroll said. "He's 12-for-13 going into the game, we will not, guys. That was a hard day for whatever reason. We didn't kick the ball off very well, either. It was just a hard day to kick the ball for us."
Walsh, as a result, who misfired on attempts from 44, 39 and 49 yards, was released by the Minnesota Vikings last year and signed a one-year deal with Seattle in the offseason. The Seahawks, elected to let longtime kicker Steven Hauschka leave in free agency.
"I didn't help my team (Sunday), and as much as I want to be there for my teammates and help us win, that's for sure," the 27-year-old Walsh said, though, is that this is the first time this year where I haven't really come through, via ESPN.com. "The thing is, and I've got to remember that. As much as it (stinks), I've got to remember that I'm capable of doing good things here."
Seattle Seahawks defensive end Dion Jordan could play in his first game since 2014 this Thursday,Womens Derrick Johnson Jersey, as the Seahawks face off against division foes, the Arizona Cardinals.
Jordan, who began the 2017 NFL season on the non-football injury, returned to practice last week and appears to be making strides in his recovery much quicker than expected.
In his weekly Monday appearance on 710 ESPN Seattle,Womens Bennie Logan Jersey, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told hosts Brock Huard and Mike Salk that Jordan is preparing for his Seahawks debut this week and will likely be activated to the 53-man roster.
“He’s ready to go,” Carroll said. “This is his first week to come back. He had a very good week last week. We’re thrilled about that for him, in particular since it’s been such a long haul to get back. But we’ll see how we can mix him in and find him a spot.”
Jordan’s return is timely as defensive end Marcus Smith suffered a concussion after hitting heads with K.J. Wright during Seattle’s 17-14 loss to Washington on Sunday.
Carroll said they will “wait and see what happens” with Smith, but seemed unsure he would be able to play this week.
“It will be hard for him to get back–that was a big hit with K.J [Wright],” Carroll said of Smith.
Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner could be a serious Defensive Player of the Year candidate,Womens Terrance Mitchell Jersey, at least Seahawks coach Pete Carroll thinks so.
The All-Pro middle linebacker already has 72 tackles (54 solo) throughout eight games and proved just how talented he is against the run in Seattle’s 17-14 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday.
Wagner came away with 12 tackles, two quarterback hurries and a pass deflection in Week 9. He also sacked Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins in the first quarter, three tackles for loss, resulting in a safety and Seattle’s first points on the board.
Wagner sustained a sore hamstring in Week 8 against the Texans, but those who watched him on Sunday against the Redskins wouldn’t notice.
Carroll told ESPN 710 Seattle hosts Brock Huard and Mike Salk during his Monday morning appearance that he was impressed with Wagner’s resilience.
“I don’t think he misses very many plays a game,Authentic Demetrius Harris Jersey, though he did practice Friday OK. He was telling me ‘don’t ever count me out’ kind of thing,” Carroll said. “He’s on most everything. . . he’s an incredible player. And Bobby didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday this week. We didn’t know all the way up to game time if he was going to go, he was getting after me a little bit. He was fired up and playing really hard and [he’s] a fantastic leader, fantastic producer.”
So, wait, scoring a go-ahead touchdown was actually a bad decision by the Seahawks?
That's what Brian Burke, of ESPN Analytics, suggests in this piece.
Quick recap of the scenario: Seattle trailed the Washington Redskins by two points with 1 minute, Russell Wilson hit Doug Baldwin about halfway to the end zone, 40 seconds remaining in an eventual 17-14 loss Sunday. Facing first-and-10 at the Washington 30, then the receiver ran the rest of the way to put the Seahawks ahead, 14-10.
Kneeling on the next two or three snaps, forcing the Redskins to use their final timeout, and further bleeding the clock to set Walsh up for what would have been approximately a 20-yard field goal with less than 20 seconds to play would have offered Seattle its best chance to win the game.
Really? Give up a sure touchdown to pin your hopes on Walsh and his scatter-leg? The percentages say yes.
For his career, Walsh has hit 36 of 37 field goals between 20-29 yards, so mathematically there's an argument for sending him back out for another kick.
Burke writes that "Taking a knee rather than scoring the touchdown would have virtually assured Seattle victory rather than giving the Redskins an 11 or 12 percent chance to prevail."
This strategy has been employed before, Seattle knows all too well how not-so-easy a perceived chip-shot field goal can be. After all, as Burke notes here. But, Walsh missing a 27-yard field goal in the playoffs against Seattle is largely how he became available for Seattle to sign.
The Seattle Seahawks have a short Week 10, heading to Arizona for the Thursday night battle of the birds.
Still recovering from Sunday’s matchups, neither team practiced on Monday.
Here’s a look at the estimated reports for both the Seahawks and the Cardinals.
Seahawks punter and holder Jon Ryan, whose tenure with the team dates to 2008, recalled Monday what happened the last time a kicker had the kind of struggles Blair Walsh did Sunday.
“I remember all the way back to when Olindo Mare had a bad game in 2009 against Chicago,’’ Ryan said of a day when Mare missed field goals of 43 and 34 yards in a 25-19 home loss. “And I think he came back from that and broke the team record for most consecutive kicks made.’’
Indeed Mare did, making his next 30 in a row, a team record that still stands.
Ryan said he won’t be surprised if that’s what happens with Walsh, who missed field goals of 44, 39 and 49 yards in Sunday’s 17-14 loss to
Thick skin, short memory,’’ Ryan said. “I think that’s what a lot of the best kickers have. … I think Blair is the exact same type of guy.’’
And coach Pete Carroll made clear Monday Walsh will get a chance to rebound saying the team does not have any plans to bring in any potential replacements.
As Carroll noted, Walsh was 12-13 before missing three on Sunday.
“I’m concerned that he had trouble in this game,’’ Carroll said Monday. “I don’t think that has to do with anything for next week. We will find out. I’ve seen him come on back. He’s been great. He’s been kicking like crazy and we are expecting him to get right back to that. Playing indoors this week aren’t we? That will be nice.’’
That the Seahawks are, playing Thursday night in Glendale against the Arizona Cardinals in controlled conditions,Authentic Derrick Johnson Jersey, unlike what Walsh encountered Sunday.
While the official listing of winds at 11 miles an hour out of the north might not indicate anything too severe, especially kicking to the north end zone,Authentic Bryan Witzmann Jersey, Ryan said it was “one of the trickier ones in the last few years’’ in terms of the conditions, which was the direction Walsh missed twice in the second quarter.
“It was pretty bad,’’ Ryan said. “You saw a couple of punts from both of us (Ryan and Washington’s Tress Way) going down that way that got up in the air and just stopped. It was real tricky kicking field goals down there.’’
Ryan also noted that all three kicks were from the middle of the field,Authentic Bennie Logan Jersey, which he said is not the preference of most kickers.
“A lot of kickers don’t like kicking from the middle of the field because you can’t really play it one way or the other,Womens Bryan Witzmann Jersey,’’ Ryan said. “And it just so happened all three kicks were from the middle of the field.’’
Then Ryan stopped and noted that he was pointing out some of the reasons for Walsh’s struggles in part because Walsh didn’t do that publicly after the game.
“He could have made a million excuses and he didn’t make one,’’ Ryan said. “He shouldered it well.’’
No doubt Walsh appeared to gain some favor in the locker room for saying that the misses “were all me.’’
Walsh missed all three kicks to the left and acknowledged later that he had some issues with trying to correct the direction due to the wind.
“I just have to know when they are traveling to the left like that in that type of weather situation to compensate for it and aim a little bit different and put it down the middle,’’ Walsh said after the game Sunday.
As Carroll noted, including making kicks of 48,Authentic Terrance Mitchell Jersey, Walsh had been almost perfect prior to Sunday,Womens Ramik Wilson Jersey, 49 and 35 that provided the difference in what is the team’s most critical win of the year so far, a 16-10 victory over the Rams in Los Angeles on Oct. 8.
But the misses against Washington put a renewed spotlight on the team’s offseason decision to allow six-year veteran Stephen Hauschka to walk in free agency and sign Walsh, $9.15 million contract he signed with Seattle in March, instead. Hauschka became a free agent when the three-year,Womens Demetrius Harris Jersey, 2014 ran out.
The decision mostly came down to economics. While Walsh signed a one-year deal with Seattle worth $1.1 million, none of it guaranteed, Authentic Ramik Wilson Jersey,Hauschka got a three-year deal worth $8.8 million and $4 million from the Buffalo Bills.
Hauschka left Seattle with the best field goal percentage in team history at 88.83, making 175-197 in six seasons.
But in a year when Seattle knew it would need every dollar to accomplish its lofty goals the team thought the tradeoff was worth it, especially considering Hauschka also had a couple of pivotal misses last season, including a 28-yarder in overtime at Arizona and a missed PAT in a home game against Arizona.
Seattle actually signed Walsh in February before Hauschka hit free agency, a preemptive move it made knowing Hauschka would likely get big offers it couldn’t — or wouldn’t want to — match.
Walsh was available after being released by Minnesota last November after a few critical misfires, including a missed 27-yarder against Seattle in a wildcard playoff game in January, 2016.
Walsh was 12-16 last season when he was waived after nine games, his exact stats for this year after eight with Seattle.
“What a great opportunity to get a talented guy, in college (at Georgia) and in the pros (Walsh was first-team all-pro as a rookie in 2012 with Minnesota),” Carroll said at the time of the signing of Walsh last spring. “The guy’s kicked as well as anyone in football, when he’s had his chances. And he’s seen the other side of it, too. He knows how to bounce back. And so he’s a tremendous talent. So he adds in and we see what happens.”
Ryan said he has no doubt what happens now.
“I talked to him last night, talked to him briefly today,’’ Ryan said. “And he’s at true professional. He’s handling it real well. He’s still very confident. It’s not like he forgot what he was doing. He knows what he’s doing.’’
